It was only twenty minutes into the hockey match and Minty and Lizzie had already been substituted. They stood at the sidelines shouting their team on, along with the other parents and siblings.

This was what Miss Woodley had suggested to Shona when she complained about Lizzie’s performance as goalie. Their form tutor recommended getting some more girls involved and giving some other players in their year group a go.

Minty turned out to be one of the first casualties of this decision, but she didn’t really mind too much. She wasn’t going to hold it against her best friend, who had to do her duty as team captain. When she glanced at the tall, curly haired girl next to her Minty could tell that she wasn’t too upset about the turn of events either.

‘Do you mind not playing in the semi-final?’ Minty asked warily.

Lizzie gave her a toothy grin. ‘Not at all. I wasn’t doing very well these last few matches and I was hoping Shona would replace me. But I didn’t want to let her down by dropping out.’

‘Yes, my performance hasn’t been brilliant either. My heart just wasn’t in it.’ Minty gazed out at the game, as the little ball was expertly whipped from one end of the pitch to the other.

Lizzie nudged her companion. ‘Can I tell you a secret?’

Minty turned back to face the girl. ‘Of course you can.’

‘My Dad’s got a new job. We’re moving to America over the school holidays. I won’t be back at the High School in September. I haven’t been able to think about anything else. My sisters and I are so excited.’

Minty squeezed her arm. ‘I’m really pleased for you. No wonder you couldn’t concentrate on our silly game of hockey.’

Lizzie shrugged her shoulders. ‘Usually I’d be as competitive as Shona but I just keep thinking of all the sport I’ll be playing in the sunshine in California.’

Minty laughed. ‘That’s quite a distraction!’

Then Minty caught sight of a figure positioned directly opposite her on the other side of the pitch. He was standing sombrely, watching the action without enthusiasm. She excused herself and strode around to join him.

‘Is everything okay?’ She asked. ‘I haven’t seen you since that night at the pier.’

‘I’ve been keeping close tabs on Grandma, making sure I know what she’s up to.’ He nodded towards the game. ‘I thought you were supposed to be playing in this?’

‘I’ve recently lost my form,’ she replied levelly. ‘Come on, let’s get out of here and find somewhere we can talk properly.’
